Questions
Is this official?
No. Project Retribution is an unofficial fan project. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by the original developers or publishers.
What is this project?
This is a fan-made, non-commercial remake of Tenchu 2: Birth of the Stealth Assassins, rebuilt using assets extracted from the original game. The goal is simple: keep the core game intact, modernise specific mechanics, and add co-op.
Is this a solo project?
Yes. Everything I post, from the dev diaries to the videos, is made by me. I didn’t create the original assets: all characters, artwork, UI and music belong to their owners. Tenchu 2 was developed by Acquire and published by Activision, and the Tenchu IP is now owned by FromSoftware. I take no credit for any of it. The assets come from my own disc copy of the game.
Why Tenchu 2 and not Tenchu 1 or Wrath of Heaven?
Tenchu 2 was my very first Tenchu game, so it holds a special place in my childhood. That’s not to say I’m not a fan of the others; I’ve played every Tenchu except Shadow Assault. I might look at Tenchu: Return from Darkness (essentially Wrath of Heaven) one day, but right now my focus is this game. I also believe others are already working on decompiling Tenchu 1.
What happens if you get a cease and desist?
I’d respect it and take the project down. That would be sad, but these characters and this world belong to their owners. Tenchu has been dormant for a long time, and this project comes from a love for the series and a wish to see it again, not from any intention to compete with or take from the people who made it. If FromSoftware ever announced a new Tenchu or a remake, I’d be first in line to buy it.
Will you ever sell or distribute this?
No. This is a free, non-commercial fan project and it will never be sold. I don’t distribute game files, assets or builds, and there are no donations, ads or merchandise.
Can I play it?
As of right now, this project is unplayable and will remain so for the foreseeable future. There is nothing to download, here or on the Discord. This site only shows progress. Join the Discord to see progress first and ask questions.
How can I get involved?
Join the Discord to talk about the original game, how its systems work, and what you would like to see written up. Progress lands there first, and questions are always welcome.
